At Twelfth Street and Clairmount Avenue, the police busted a raid on an after hours drinking club in a black neighborhood. This was the beginning of the Detroit Raid of 1967. To the police's surprise there was eighty-two people there throwing a party for two veterans. The police attempted to arrest all of the people there, while they were doing so, a large group formed outside the club to protest. Reports of vandalism grew more frequent because people were upset that they were kicked out of the only place they could go. People started looting and starting fires, within 48 hours the National Guard was called in. In a total of five days 43 people were killed, 1,189 people were hurt and over 7,000 people were arrested. This is important because it was a big part of the start of people protesting and standing up and fighting for what they believe.
